How to Get Consulting Clients: Build a Repeatable Plan for Finding New Business
If you're trying to figure out how to get more consulting clients, you probably don't have a shortage of marketing ideas.
You could post more.
Send more emails.
Attend networking events.
Ask for referrals.
Reach out to old contacts.
Start showing up on LinkedIn.
Create another free resource.
Pitch yourself for speaking opportunities.
There are plenty of things you could do.
But I want you to answer a different question:
If you needed two new consulting clients in the next 30 days, would you know exactly what you were going to do?

Not everything you could try.
What would you actually do?
That's an important distinction.
Because getting a client and having a repeatable plan for getting clients are two different things.
You've Already Proven People Will Pay You
If you've already had a consulting client, you've proven something important.
Someone was willing to pay for your expertise.
Maybe that client came through a referral.
Maybe they found you online.
Maybe you met them at an event.
Maybe they heard you speak.
Maybe they had been following you for months before they finally reached out.
However they found you, you got the client.
But here's the question:
Could you intentionally create another opportunity for that to happen?
That's where many consultants get stuck.
You're not necessarily struggling because you aren't good at what you do.
You're struggling because every time you need more business, it feels like you're starting over.
More Marketing Isn't Necessarily the Answer
When revenue gets quiet, it's easy to immediately start doing more.
More posting.
More networking.
More emails.
More offers.
More content.
More platforms.
But activity and strategy aren't the same thing.
You can be extremely busy marketing your business without being able to explain which activities are actually helping you get clients.
That's why I don't think the first question should always be:
“What else can I do?”
A better question is:
“What's my actual plan for getting clients?”
In business, we call this client acquisition.
It sounds much more complicated than it is.
Client acquisition is simply how you're intentionally creating opportunities for people to become paying clients.
And when you have a strategy behind it, you aren't forced to reinvent your marketing every time business gets quiet.
You're able to make decisions based on a plan instead of panic.

You Don't Need to Know Exactly Who Your Next Client Will Be
This is one of the biggest things I want consultants to understand.
You aren't supposed to be able to predict exactly who will hire you next.
But you should have some clarity around how you're creating opportunities for that next client to find, consider, and eventually pay you.
That's the difference.
There's uncertainty in business.
There doesn't have to be complete randomness.
And if you've already proven people are willing to pay for your expertise, your next step may not be creating something else.
It may be building a better strategy for doing it again.
